Fake Websites: How Scammers Build Them in Minutes
Modern scam websites can look identical to legitimate ones. With website builders and AI, a convincing fake site can be created in under an hour. But despite the polished appearance, there are always tells.
Domain Age Is Your First Check
Most scam websites are registered days or weeks before they start operating. A legitimate business has had its domain for years. You can check domain age using WHOIS lookup tools. If a site selling products was registered last week, that's a major red flag.
Missing Contact Information
Legitimate businesses provide a physical address, phone number, and customer service email. Scam sites often have no contact page, or only a generic form. Try the phone number and email — if they don't work, the site isn't real.
Too-Good-To-Be-True Pricing
If a website offers brand-name products at 80% off, it's almost certainly a scam. Scammers use impossibly low prices to create urgency — 'limited time offer!' — and pressure you into buying before you research.
- •Check the domain registration date via WHOIS
- •Look for a physical address and try calling the phone number
- •Read reviews on independent sites (not on the scam site itself)
- •Check if the payment page is secure (HTTPS with a valid certificate)
- •Search for the site name + "scam" or "review" before purchasing
- •Use ScamCheckr to scan the URL for known scam patterns
Social Media Ads Leading to Scam Sites
Many people encounter scam sites through social media ads. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram struggle to filter out all fraudulent advertisers. If an ad shows up in your feed with an unbelievable offer, paste the URL into ScamCheckr before clicking 'Buy Now.'
Remember: if something looks too good to be true online, it almost always is.
